Alibaba Bedroom Furniture
Has anyone ever ordered a bedroom set from Alibaba?
Found a few Chinese companies that make furniture out of pure wood. I was wondering if any of you have tried this tactic?

I've ordered hundreds of cheap electronics items. No issues and reasonably decent delivery time to Europe. Furniture... No, I wouldn't bother. Not worth it.

This sounds like a huge risk. I'm not sure it's actually frugal to make that purchase, in that the risk of losing the money if this furniture doesn't work out would outweigh the nominal savings you might get. There are so many factors to go wrong with this order including shipping, customs, quality, sizing, and damage during transport. I'd even be suspicious of their claim of "pure wood". You're perhaps better off purchasing used.

Honestly at this point your going for cheap instead of frugal I would scan your local consignment/thrift stores and see what they had or even check and see what's on sale at an actual furniture store, place near me has a 30-50% sale right now

Buy used/vintage/antique. Better quality and cheaper. Whatever your style is, you can find it.

Be. Very. Careful. I read a story of someone who bought bedding and the only way to ship it was through sea mail - they ended up with bedbugs. Not sure whether it was caused by the boat or the seller, but be suuuuper careful.

Just to add bugs can get into wood too not just cloth.

I have bought a ton of stuff off aliexpress, but you should expect whatever furniture you buy to have every shortcut taken. "100 percent wood" will be particleboard with a veneer, not pure oak. Hollow pannels to save on materials. Cheap drawer sliders that cannot withstand much weight. There's no clear cut answer on this, but don't expect the set to last more than a couple years.

I've purchased 3 different things off AliExpress without any issue.
-
Badminton shuttlecocks: they were name-brand so the only possibility is that they are counterfeit, which they weren't. Probably. You can't buy this particular brand in the US at this particular price but the price was about right for grey market goods from Asia.
-
Badminton shuttlecock humidifier: couldn't possibly be a "factory second" since they are not sold anywhere else. "Factory second" would imply that there's a place where the "firsts" go, which there isn't. This is a pretty niche product--a large percentage of badminton players wouldn't ever need one, e.g. in tropical areas where badminton is popular like Southeast Asia.

Backup camera + mount custom made for my model car: Same as above. It's lasted through heavy rain which is all I ever hoped it would do, so it's already exceeded my expectations.
I don't see AliExpress as being any different from the sellers on Amazon or eBay who also ship directly from China. Seems you get exactly what you pay for.

Well, as a big guy, I don't buy clothes or shoes from Ali express.
But furniture? And I'm sure my local giant furniture big box store just orders the same stuff from China.

If you post some links we could check out for sure to see if it's worth it - but i agree with most people here, i'm highly skeptical it is pure wood.
level 2
There's definitely places that make pure wood beds.
However, I just came across the shipping costs of one of them. 5500$. I'm pretty sure to make it worth it, I'd need to buy a whole shipping container and then sell the extras.

I bought a desk on ebay that was made in Asia (Indonesia?). Here's a picture, except I bought it in dark mahagoni instead of white. I paid 129€ for it and I am absolutely happy with it. (Sells for >400€ on Amazon). I wanted / needed this exact desk for good reasons, otherwise I would have bought a regular desk at IKEA. It was delivered with a couple of dead bugs and a dead spider. So, you can be lucky or luck out.

I would think shipping costs would be very high. Why aren't they?
level 2
Depends. If you're comparing to other imports, it'll be similarly high. The savings from cheap labor might offset the shipping cost
If you're comparing to non-Chinese goods, China often subsidizes shipping costs (not sure about furniture in particular, but it's very common for a lot of goods). I'd be surprised if furniture made the cut, but it's not impossible
level 2
IME, AliExpress shipping ranges from free to exorbitant depending on item. I'm going to guess that big heavy furniture is in the latter category.

If it's truly made out of solid wood then go into it with the mind set of "I'll fix it up when it gets here with a few more screws." Or something like that. Then if it gets here and everything is made great then no worries.
